Exercise is essential for injury prevention

Lady Lion athletic trainer Danielle Leonard has a lot on her plate during basketball season, but she wouldn’t be quite as busy if Ennis High athletes would take a more preventative approach when it comes to their risk of on-court injury.
“The main things (athletic trainers) worry about with basketball are sprained ankles — when you’re susceptible to coming down on somebody else’s foot and rolling your ankle,” Leonard said. “A lot of players wear braces, which can help prevent that injury. Those who’ve already had ankle injuries make sure to get taped (before games).”

Basketball knee injuries like ACL sprains or patella tendonitis are more difficult to foresee, but Leonard said players with weak quad muscles put themselves at a greater risk for such issues.
