This year, open your home to pet adoption

Pet ownership is a beautiful reminder of the feeling of unconditional love.
Particularly when the animal you own is brought into your family from a life of hardship or need — it may take a while for a new pet to get used to a new environment and new owners, but the connection will be strong once it forms.

At this time of year, especially, we as a culture like to stop and take stock of the blessings in our lives and spend time with each other. There is almost no better time in the hustle and bustle of the daily grind to bring new members into the family, so to speak.

The Ellis County SPCA is just one option for people in the area who are interested in becoming pet owners, adding another little furball or hound dog to the family or giving a companion to a child.

The bottom line is there is never a shortage of animals who need homes that will be loving and caring, and too often we find ways to avoid the responsibility.

We’d encourage those who can to bring a gift on their household this year — adoption is a wonderful way to fill your heart with feelings of joy.

It’s also a practical way to teach children about the responsibilities of caring for something that needs protection. Animals help build up the ability to adhere to routine that becomes such an important part of adult life in the world we live in. Nothing is as instructive as hands-on learning, either, and feeding and caring for the health of a vulnerable creature is the epitome of hands-on.
