In bed with Rotary

Harriett Adams wins downtown race after polka parade
The First Annual Ennis Rotary Club Bed Races was a sleeper hit following the National Polka Festival Parade last weekend.
“We were about the only thing going downtown,” Rotary president Richard Webb said of the general exodus of spectators after the parade due to Saturday’s rain and wind. “The opening ceremonies got moved to KJT Hall but we still had a good crowd with us. They cheered us on and we all had a good time.”
Before the bed races began between three local businesses –– Harriett Adams Interior Design, Sunbelt Brick and Ennis State Bank –– a number of Rotarians donned sleepwear (crossed with raingear) to ride on and wave from the organization’s float. Among those aboard were president Webb, Carey Bryan of the Boys & Girls Club, Norma Epstein of Bluebonnet ReMax, Debbie Box of Allstate, Sandy Anderson, Blanton Webb, Rusty Polston, Pavell Nitchovsky and Jason Morse.
The course for the bed race extended from Ennis Avenue, along S. McKinney St. to Brown St. and back, with teams pushing the beds along the streets.
In the final tally, the Harriett Adams team won first place, Sunbelt came away second and Ennis State placed third.
“We took off running and had a good start,” Webb said of his team, Sunbelt. “But about 10-20 yards in, I knew we were in trouble.”
Webb said he’s just glad there were no injuries on the wet streets: “Although I did pull a hitch in my getty-up!”
