Same time next year

It’s a shame Mother Nature wasn’t in a festive mood this weekend, because Ennis had a full calendar of activities that sure could have used some nice weather.
As most of you know by now, Country Thunder USA kicked off their first Texas concert series on Thursday under rainy skies. It was hoped that the weather would get better as the weekend wore on, but it seems just the opposite happened. All of Friday’s performances were cancelled. Saturday’s performances took place in rain and mud and by Sunday – the final day of the event – organizers decided to throw in the towel for good and none of the acts took the stage that day.
It was a shame to say the least. An awful lot of work went into this event and officials were expecting it to be their biggest debut to date. It’s doubtful that any amount of preparation could have prevented the muddy conditions that shut down the concert. Country Thunder officials have said they plan on doing something to make it up to ticket holders, but it remains to be seen what that entails.
The 41st Annual National Polka Festival fared better, but still had to suffer through the stormy, wet weather. We were proud to see so many people turn out for the parade Saturday. Many were huddled under umbrellas, while others seemed resigned to their fate and decided to just soak up the rain along with all the attractions the festival had to offer.
Even though the weather didn’t cooperate, we can still count ourselves lucky to have two such popular events taking place annually in our area. Hopefully, we’ll get clear skies next year and this year’s visitors will return for the fun.
