A song and a prayer

Tanya Godsey joins big acts tomorrow at Celebrate Freedom
Celebrate Freedom, the mega contemporary Christian music concert that comes to Southfork Ranch near Dallas tomorrow, offers another reason for local fans to celebrate. Ennis’ own Tanya Godsey will be one of the featured performers.
“It’s humbling,” Godsey says, “because 10 years ago, I was in the audience at Celebrate Freedom, enjoying the music of all the artists I loved so much.”
A rising Christian music artist whose CD “Nothing Less Than Everything” is receiving steady national airplay, Godsey is the daughter of Pastor Lynn Godsey, outspoken founder of the Dallas-Fort Worth coalition Alianza Hispana Evangelica Del Metroplex (AHEM).
“My wife and I have almost been in shock these last few days about the recent doors that have opened,” said Tanya’s proud dad.
Thanks to her recent national radio exposure via the Pilgrim Network of Christian stations, Tanya was added to the roster of top performers appearing at the concert June 29-30.
Started 17 years ago by 94.9 KLTY, the first mainstream adult contemporary channel in the country to play Christian music, Celebrate Freedom is sponsored by Interstate Batteries and CBS-11 TV.
The largest free outdoor music festival in America, the two-day event annually draws 210,000 people. This year’s entertainment lineup ensures Ennis-bred Tanya will be in sterling company; over 40 leading Christian singers and bands, including Toby Mac, Casting Crowns and Aaron Shust, are appearing.
Mentored in Nashville by Reed Arvin (who produced Rich Mullins’ famous “Awesome God”) and coached by another industry icon, John Mays, Tanya is on her own way to musical fame.
Asked about her inspiration to sing, she told the Ennis Daily News she was “a late bloomer.”
“I’ve always loved music but I went through a period that I just didn’t sing,” Tanya said. “I had to sort of find it again later on. I didn’t really know that God had this for my life until I was in college, and at that point I was like, “Who, me?” I definitely feel like the whole performance aspect of music has been the biggest challenge for someone like me who is mostly introverted. But the challenge of going outside my comfort zone makes me rely on God so much more. I feel like this journey chose me – like God has definitely authored my story, piece by piece.”
The Ennis High graduate and Dallas Baptist University alumna has for the last seven years been pursuing her recording career in Nashville, where she lives with her husband, Jake.
Slated to appear on the Celebrate Freedom stage at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Tanya says she’s excited yet humbled.
“I’m grateful,” Tanya said of the chance to join Celebrate Freedom, “but at the same time I do look at it as just another opportunity to communicate the same truth I’ve communicated to an audience of four or five people before. I still just want to be a good steward of this door of opportunity because I believe that every opportunity is a good work that God planned for me to do before I even knew it was part of the plan.”
