Farewell to the Florida Boys

It isn’t often something really huge happens to a small town so we don’t mind using some ink to congratulate the Trinidad Volunteer Fire Department for scoring the gospel music coup of the decade this week.
The firefighters over at our not-so-far-away neighbor Trinidad, called us to let us know the world-renowned Florida Boys Gospel Quartet will conduct their final performance before retirement as a benefit concert to help raise money for their fire department.
There may be some folks, we guess, who may not have heard of the beloved Florida Boys, and others who might not care one hoot about Southern Gospel quartet music, but even if you don’t, you should know this is a very big deal.
Founded in 1947 under the name Gospel Melody Quartet, the Florida Boys have evolved into one of the premier Gospel acts in the world with countless number one hits and albums to their credit.
Les Beasley, leader and group manager, has served as president of the Gospel Music Association, the Southern Gospel Music Association and is currently president of the National Quartet Convention. Beasley is also the winner of countless Dove Awards (comparable to the CMA awards of Country Music) and is in the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame, The Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For over 50 years fans have been flocking to see The Florida Boys, the only male quartet that’s been consistently prominent from the 1950’s to today. With No. 1 hits like “Standing On the Solid Rock,” “When He Was On The Cross, I Was On His Mind,” “Lead Me To The Altar” and “I Lean On You Lord,” this legendary group has recorded some 100 albums and attained a following of devoted listeners.
The Florida Boys’ national television appearances include “The Today Show,” “TNN’s Prime Time Country,” “Crooke & Chase,” “Gaither Homecoming Videos,” and their own “Gospel Singing Jubilee” which they hosted for many years.
This group is, and has been for 50 years, one of the elite Southern Gospel groups in the world. We wanted to make sure our readers who are fans knew about this farewell event.
The show will be held Sat. July 21 at the Trinidad School Auditorium located in downtown Trinidad. Showtime is 8 p.m. For more information, call 903-432-1827 or 214-454-8467.
