Athlete of the Week: Ferris 7-on-7 football

The Ferris Yellowjackets 7-on-7 football team advanced to the state tournament where they went 3-3 against teams in Class 4A.

While the Jax are this week’s selection, their top performer was senior wide receiver Joecoby Woodson (No. 19 in visor). The 6-foot flyer scored 16 touchdowns in six games. He reeled in a number of highlight-reel receptions.

New QB Riley Fagan (No. 12 in back), junior, stepped up and led new head coach Brandon Layne’s team.

A few others who did well included WR Kobe Lankford, OL Jerry Hernandez and LB Damian Edwards.

Two of Ferris’ biggest wins were over Odom and LaMarque, while an overtime setback against Burnett and a four-point setback to Midland Greenwood prevented them from placing.

Kaufman won the Class 4A championship in 7-on-7.

“Our guys turned in a super effort,” Layne said, “but I believe we benefited most from improving game skills and from playing in such a demanding format in terms of competition.”

Ferris State 7on7Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Ennis State Bank.
