Banquet caps Ennis softball season

By Mark Warde

Softball players, their families and fans met Monday night at First United Methodist Church to summarize the Ennis Lady Lions season.

Lezley Norris customized a DVD that captured another successful campaign. It was filled with music, photos, highlights and honors and ended much like the season. Right when it was getting good, it came to a screeching halt. The FUMC large-screen video projection went on the fritz during its showing, leaving players with a home-version disc to watch on their own.

Two years removed from finishing second in the state with nearly 40 wins, the 2016 edition went 18-12. They were on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in school history in the second round of the playoffs when they fell apart.

No. 3 ranked Hallsville, toting a 31-3 record, had a 12-5 lead over Ennis when Team Maroon put together a phenomenal rally. A three-run homer by Morelia “Mo” Monreal gave the Lady Lions a 13-12 lead in the top of the seventh.
