Bill boosts counties’ oversight

Nick Todaro, nick@ennisdailynews.com

The state House of Representatives voted 146-0 on Wednesday to pass a bill that would empower counties like Ellis County’s southern neighbor Navarro County to exercise development authority over slaughterhouse developers.

Rep. Jim Pitts

Navarro County’s Rep. Byron Cook authored the legislation with Ellis County’s Rep. Jim Pitts signing on as a co-author.

The bill would change the state’s local government code in such a way that Navarro County would have the ability to regulate such projects in the wake of some local controversy over a proposed slaughterhouse.

The measure would be effective starting in September.
