Steve Howerton, city manager of Ennis for more than three decades, has announced his intent to retire effective Dec. 31.

Howerton has served as city manager for Ennis since 1981, working with six mayors, 22 city commissioners, five superintendents of the Ennis Independent School District, eight managers of the Ennis Chamber of Commerce, three police chiefs and four fire chiefs, among numerous others.

“Looking back over the past 31 years, I cannot imagine any undertaking that could have been more professionally and personally fulfilling than serving as your city manager,” Howerton wrote in a letter to city commissioners. “I and my family have been truly blessed by the relationships and expressions of love and kindness that have come from countless friends and colleagues over the decades and we owe our heartfelt gratitude to each of you and those throughout the community who have enriched our lives.”
