‘Red’ Duke dead at 86

Renowned surgeon and Texas icon James H. “Red” Duke Jr., originally from Ennis, died Tuesday.

Duke, a professor at UT Health Science Center in Houston, was known for his military issued wire-rimmed glasses, Texas accent and his trademark mustache.

A trauma surgeon, Duke was in the public spotlight for decades, appearing on television in his syndicated reports that started on Channel 13 in Houston.

He was instrumental in developing the Life Flight program in the 1970s, an air ambulance service still going strong today.
