County green lights new police pursuit policy

The Ellis County Commissioners Court officially recognized May as Motorcycle Awareness Month Tuesday. The approval came just moments before commissioners tackled an issue that’s been in question since May 5, 2013, when two men fleeing police on motorcycles got into a wreck involving Constable Terry Nay and his personal Ford F-350 pickup truck.

A month ago, County Judge Carol Bush asked all four county constables to work alongside the Sheriff’s Office to create a comprehensive pursuit policy. Tuesday, she reiterated that point.

“Some of the constables have a policy, the Sheriff’s Office has a policy. But we were hoping there would be an effort to come up with a uniform pursuit policy for all our law enforcement, especially in light of some recent incidents.” she said, alluding to the 2013 wreck and the ongoing civil suit that stemmed from it.

Motorcycle riders from across the county attended Ellis County Commissioners Court Tuesday for recognition of May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. The recognition came during the same meeting when a county law enforcement pursuit policy was the main topic of conversation.
