Emergency management team hits ground running

Samantha Pickett has been introduced as the new emergency management coordinator for Ellis County. She was hired by County Judge Todd Little and introduced to the County Commissioners during their previous meeting. Little says, “She comes to us with great experience from working with the North Texas Council of Governments in their emergency response team. She was involved in the evacuations surrounding hurricane Harvey and the response in the aftermath of that hurricane.” Pickett graduated from the University of North Texas with a degree in Emergency Management and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in local government management also from UNT. With her experience at the Council of Governments, she says her first priority is to “…get up to speed with the current emergency response plan. Fortunately, Tim (Birdwell, Ellis county fire marshal) and Ralph (Ellis county administrative planner) have put together a solid plan. I will then need to review the reports written after the last few incidents in the County and meet with responders in the County including the volunteer departments to get input if there needs to be improvement in coordination or communications. Then we will plan a ‘table-top’ drill in order to see how the plan works. If that is successful, then we will schedule a full-scale live exercise to test the response to an emergency in the county.” …Read the rest of this story and more stories like this in this Sunday edition of The Ennis News.
