Suicide support group starts in Ellis County

A tragic loss of an active military veteran to suicide, a 28-year old who was serving in the U.S. Air Force, has made a huge impact on his family. Two years later his passing is bringing help and hope to others who have endured a similar fate.

Daniel Shoemaker made a fateful decision (January 2014) that was a permanent solution to a problem that was probably temporary. There were no indications such a choice was being considered, which left his family with more questions than answers.

Reportedly, there are 22 veterans that take their lives daily. In fact, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America, ranking above homicide.

“With suicide there’s never going to be an answer for every question,” said Felecia Criss, 37, Shoemaker’s sister. “The grief goes on forever. The grief changes and evolves in stages, but it lasts.”

She looked for a support group in the area, but to no avail.
