Jim Terrell from The Happy Dragon educational group, based out of Dallas, lets Ennis’ Garren Sheehan hold a turtle during a presentation Thursday at the Ennis Public Library as a part of the library’s Summer Reading Program. The Dallas-based reptile education group was founded to help people understand reptiles in a fun, nonthreatening environment and specializes in parties and events. Happy Dragon also works with area reptile rescues to connect animals with permanent homes.

Part of Thursday’s program included announcements about the reading program’s cumulative reading results for the summer to date. The program’s kindergarteners have logged 4,020 minutes of reading, with first-graders tallying 2,690 minutes, second-graders hitting 3,260 minutes, third-graders reading 3,660 minutes, fourth-graders in the lead at 4,470 minutes, fifth-graders with 3,320 minutes and sixth-graders tallying 1,670 minutes.
