DA requests accused teen be tried as an adult

A district judge ruled the certification hearing for the 16-year-old Italy High School accused shooter will be open to the public. Prosecutors are requesting that he be tried as an adult. At a hearing Tuesday, the teen’s attorney, Charles Slaton, requested that the courtroom be closed for the June 5 hearing about whether his client will be tried as an adult. Slayton said pretrial publicity would prevent the teen from getting a fair trial, and his mother testified that news coverage caused her son to suffer from depression. Ellis County prosecutors Samantha Vickery and Lindy Beaty urged District Judge Cindy Ermatinger to keep the courtroom open. Ermatinger ruled Tuesday that the hearing to determine whether to try the teen, who is being held on two counts of aggravated assault, will remain open. The teen waived his right to be present and was not at Tuesday’s hearing. Read stories like this and more in your latest edition of The Ennis News. Be informed, subscribe today!
