Ennis spring football: Lions learning to roar

By Mark Warde

Monday’s spring football scrimmage at Lion Memorial Stadium was as much about the next two years as it was about the 2016 Ennis varsity.

Rather than one exhibition of returning players, head coach Jack Alvarez and his staff first held a scrimmage between this year’s freshmen and sophomores, who appear to be very solid, followed by another that, included a mix of the younger with juniors. There was plenty to like.

There were so many players to watch, the scrimmage was videotaped from the end zone for further review. Plus, new drone operator, Samantha Maksud, filmed the action from above.

She is an interesting story herself. Having been trained for weeks with the four-prop flying equipment, the American-born senior to be – whose last name is Assyrian, will have quite a busy fall with drone photography.

Plus, she plays the bass clarinet in the Ennis Marching Band.

Over the next few months, while players are working out and spending time on vacation, Coach Alvarez and staff will be analyzing the best positions for players based on their spring performances. They will also be scheming the best combinations for cohesion and effectiveness for the offensive and defensive systems they plan to employ come August.

Preseason camp starts in early August, which is the first time they will get a look at incoming freshmen, transfers and new students to the school district. The next opportunity to see the Lions is Friday, Aug. 19, when Lake Dallas High School visits Ennis for a scrimmage. The Falcons went 12-3 last year. In fact, the Class 5A team has a string of five straight winning seasons entering 2016.

In recent years Ennis has been meeting Longview, a perennial state power, in a tune-up for the regular season opener. Going up against a solid opponent has proven to be a litmus test for Team Maroon, and Lake Dallas will continue that trend.
