ESB, Firehouse Grill take 1-2 in Polka Parade

Fifty-three years and counting, the Ennis Polka Festival Parade has been making smiles along Ennis Avenue, including this year’s event. According to Jeannette Patak, the CEO of the Ennis Chamber of Commerce, there were 135 entries in the parade, which surpassed the total from 2018. Considering that number doesn’t include cars that carried sponsors and local leaders, not to mention some of the car club entries, the total was approximately 200. Always easy to spot, the huge, engine-powered HEB grocery cart towered above the crowd. Judges selected the top four floats, including Ennis State Bank, who took top honors in first place. Firehouse Grill, a perennial favorite, finished second. Two halls were chosen third and fourth in SPJST and SOKOL, respectively. Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas) is SPJST Lodge No. 25. The Sokol Activity Center took fourth place honors. “The first few years (the parade) came down Ennis Avenue like we do today but turned on North West Main Street,” recalled Patak this week. “Then it turned left on to West Knox Street and (returned) back to Clay. “On SW Main Street, there was a stage and a few vendors. I know they had a Polka Festival Booth selling the BBQ and klobase sandwiches and a band or two play with street dancing. They would also have the Beseda Dancers from the Dallas area perform.” Weather cooperated, bringing a sunny sky and enough breeze to keep things pleasant.
