Federal waiver frees funds

Phil Banker, phil@ennisdailynews.com

Ennis ISD has one less federal burden to worry about according to Assistant Superintendent Kathy Cikanek.

Cikanek said at the Tuesday night meeting of the Ennis ISD Board of Trustees that the state of Texas has finally acquired a waiver from a provision of No Child Left Behind, suspending the district’s requirement to follow Adequate Yearly Progress protocols.

“What it really means for us though is that we no longer have to set aside 20 percent of our Title 1 funds for supplemental education providers, which means people from the outside to come in to do tutorials,” she said. “We’re now free to use those funds on programs that we see best fit the needs of our students.”
