Fire sparks investigation

By Justin Tubbs

A vacant house fire at 600 W. Baldridge St. is under investigation for arson, according to Ennis Fire Marshal Chad Wester.

“The house was abandoned. There was no electricity to the residence. No furrniture in the house, so as of now the fire is under investigation,” he said.

Wester says the fire was extinguished around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, when many in the neighborhood were sleeping, but there were at least a couple of witnesses who say they saw the fire.

One woman who lives in a neighboring home said she was sitting in her car in her driveway when she noticed a suspicious vehicle and then the flames. She asked to remain anonymous.

“I was looking at my house, and I thought I saw brake lights, so I looked back and saw there was a fire in the house,” the witness said. “I was like, ‘What? The house is on fire.’”

She called 911, and Ennis Fire Department was at the scene in minutes. She said she was asked questions by investigators. She told them she saw a black SUV driving around the block slowly and even pulling into the vacant house’s driveway before driving off. Ten minutes later, she said, is when she noticed the fire.

“It made the block and drove on in front of the house after it pulled into the driveway and pulled out.”

A neighbor directly next door to the home, John Collis, said he was in his bathroom when he heard what sounded like people talking in the home next door.

“I heard something that sounded like people talking, and then there was the fire,” he recalled. “I don’t know who it was, and I hadn’t seen anybody in the house before.”

Collis’ home was severely damaged on one side by the flames. Wednesday he worked at boarding up broken windows.

The vacant house, according to Wester, had been abandoned since at least 2009, the last time the water meter was turned on at the house.

Wester couldn’t give any more details into the investigation.
