Former Teacher of the Year killed in head-on crash

Kelly Boston, a beloved Ennis High School teacher, husband and father of two was killed Friday night in a car accident while on a family vacation in Colorado.

The 47-year-old teacher was driving on Colorado State Highway 9 near Fairplay when the GMC Acadia he was driving collided head-on with a Chevrolet 1500, according to a report from Fox21 News in Colorado. Two more were seriously injured in the wreck, according to the report, including a passenger riding with Boston and a back-seat passenger in the Chevrolet.

Sources said the passenger riding with Boston was Boston’s brother-in-law, who was transported to a Denver-area hospital. The passenger’s name is not given in the Fox21 report.

According to the report, everyone, including Boston, was wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision; speed and drugs or alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.

Boston’s Facebook page was filled with comments by former students, colleagues and friends looking to grieve with one another on social media Saturday morning when the news of his death spread.

Ariel Burden, the 2016 Ennis High School valedictorian was one such student. She said, “Praying loud as can be for this one. God, take care of him. You gained the best of the best.”

She also re-shared a video message posted by Boston to his students earlier this year.

In the video Boston challenged his students to avoid complacency after high school by having something to “work hard at” and “get better at” every day.

“You get lazy, you get lethargic, and everything’s the same every day – that’s an easy way to get depressed and get down on things; so find something you can work hard at, something that’s challenging to you and something you’re getting better at.”

Boston was the 2015 Ennis ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year Award recipient.

Ennis Independent School District reacted to the loss of one of their most well-loved teachers on Facebook:

“On behalf of Ennis ISD, our hearts are very heavy as we mourn the loss of our very own Kelly Boston. Mr. Boston exemplified every positive characteristic known to man, but his greatest legacy was his relationship to God as seen through the eyes of proof in his daily walk. He walked the path of stewardship daily and will be missed more than words can say. Our continued prayers are with Penny (Boston’s wife), Addy, and Rylee (Boston’s daughters) and family.”

Boston’s wife, Penny, is a library media specialist for Ennis ISD.
