It’s Polka time!

By Justin Tubbs

The National Polka Festival is rolling in yet again, and some people have the question, “Just how valuable is the festival to Ennis?”

According to Ennis Economic Development Director Marty Nelson, the impact can be very big.

“From an economic impact perspective, any event or festival that runs multiple days has a significant impact on the local economy, from hotel occupancy to discretionary spending,” he said. “Spending that generates sales tax is better, but all spending is good.”

He went on to explain that the Polka Festival, Bluebonnet Festival and the Texas Motorplex are known events for bringing significant imported spending into the community.

In 2015, the Polka Festival weekend was rainy, causing some enthusiasts to avoid going outside. This year could have some rain as well; but, according to a financial report prepared by the City, that won’t stop people from spending money.

Last year, all the hotels in Ennis were completely booked during the Polka Festival weekend, and 4,500 people in all paid to enter halls to see live music.

The Hotel Occupancy Tax in Ennis is 13 percent. Of that, the state gets a six percent cut, and Ennis receives seven percent. According to Tourism Director Gina Rokas, with fully booked hotels Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Ennis would reap about $9,000 to $10,000 in Hotel Occupancy Tax revenue.

“Of course not everybody stays Sunday night. But with people staying Thursday night and some people staying until Sunday, it kind of evens out to a full three nights booked,” Rokas said.
