Kolache eating champions chosen

By Justin Tubbs

The best part of Polka Fest, many will agree, is the food.

Whether it’s the klobase and sauerkraut, or the warm kolaches fresh out the oven, many people from Ennis and those who visit here each year love Czech food.

A perennial favorite, the SPJST holds a kolache eating contest right in the middle of downtown Ennis. Saturday afternoon, four champions were named in this year’s kolache eating contest in front of hundreds of festival-goers at the main National Polka Festival tent on the corner of Baylor and Main Street.

Connor Davis, an Ennis boy, was named the boys 12-and-under champion after eating one kolache faster than about eight other competitors.

“I didn’t eat much for breakfast or for lunch,” he said when asked how he prepared for the contest.

Martina Kovarik, an Ennis girl, was crowned the champion of the girls 12-and-under contest, and she said she really didn’t do anything to prepare. She ate one kolache faster than a group of competitors.

Aime Wall, a 22-year-old from Waxahachie, was named the kolache queen after she ate two kolaches faster than the rest of the group. Her strategy was to smash them together like a sandwich.

In the men’s competition, Jonathan Newton, the Ennis volleyball coach, defended his crown as king of the kolache eating contest. He downed three kolaches faster than most could finish one.
