Letter carriers canned food drive, Saturday May 11

National Association of Letter Carriers celebrate 27 years of food collection on Saturday, May 11. Their annual date, which has occurred during heavy rains the past two years, is an effort to collect non-perishable food items during their regular delivery routes. Mail personnel ask citizens to leave a bag or box filled with non-perishable food items near a mailbox so they can collect them for donating to local food banks. The primary or lone beneficiary in the area has been Helping Hands of Ennis, though collections are distributed to agencies and organizations throughout the nation. Tisha Brown, a veteran staffer at Helping Hands, said this week that common items are always received (canned vegetables, fruit, Spaghetti O’s and Ravioli, pasta, soup, frozen hamburger, bread, peanut butter and jelly, etc.), though she said they are currently empty of cereal.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” she said, “and cereal – all kinds and flavors, as well as oatmeal and Pop-Tarts, things kids can eat on the go, we could really use cereal.” Statistics show that 1-in-6 Americans do not know where their next meal is coming from….Read the rest of this story and more stories like this in the latest edition of The Ennis News.
