Spurgeons Bardwell memorial set for June 1

A memorial for Michael Spurgeon, Sr., and his son, Michael Spurgeon, Jr., has been scheduled from noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, at the Bardwell Community Center, 504 N. Waxahachie Ave. in Bardwell. Spurgeon, Sr., 67, was the Bardwell police chief, while Spurgeon, Jr., 40, was a volunteer firefighter and a reserve police officer in Bardwell. The two were well-known in the area and were considered friends of the Texas Motorplex, where Mike, Jr., had worked for over 10 years as a race starter. Both perished in a head-on collision on S.H. 34, just west of Highview Park Road, on Sunday, March 24. Organizers of the memorial have requested that families and organizations who wish to participate to bring a side dish or a dessert that pairs well with barbecue. The City of Bardwell continues collecting donations for the Spurgeons, which will be presented to them at the memorial.
