Looking back at a storm, one year later

Phil Banker, phil@ennisdailynews.com

One year after a category EF-1 tornado ripped through downtown Ennis, Mayor Russell Thomas said new life has sprung up in the storm’s wake.

Thomas said in the months following the tornado’s sweep through the heart of the city, new initiatives meant to help rebuild the downtown area have revitalized the city.

“We’ve seen a huge turnaround in downtown,” Thomas said, crediting much of the success to the Ennis Economic Development Corporation. “New life has been given to an old downtown that had been dwindling and not doing too well. We’ve got people interested in revitalizing those buildings.”

Thomas said he remembered going to bed the night of May 15, 2013, not realizing a storm was hours away from altering the city’s future forever.
