Phil Bankerphil@ennisdailynews.com

A reported plane crash in rural Ellis County left two dead on Sunday.

Texas Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Lonny Haschel confirmed that a single engine aircraft went down at approximately 10:35 a.m. near FM 984 and Gorman Road in the Rankin area.

Haschel said multiple first responders including police, fire, EMS and state troopers arrived to find a single engine plane had crashed into a field and burst into flames. He confirmed two dead in the wreckage.

He said witnesses told investigators that the plane appeared to level off shortly before the crash, as if to make an emergency landing.

He said the crash will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. The names of the deceased, their flight plan or the type of aircraft are unknown at this time.
