Polka 50th, good as gold

By Mark Warde

Even in a city known for pulling in crowds for community events, this year’s National Polka Festival likely topped its record for attendance according to the Ennis Chamber of Commerce. Cooperating weather and a near record number of vendors had downtown swelling with locals and out of town visitors.

“It was a wonderful day,” said Jeannette Patak, of the Chamber. “The early numbers look like over 20,000 were on hand and we had 140 vendors as well.”

As for whether the latter topped the best the city has seen wasn’t known at press time, though she said it exceeded last year. “About 10 years ago, during the 40th anniversary, the crowds and booths downtown were very large.”

New Mayor Angie Juenemann, who was omnipresent in her vintage attire, was proud of what she saw and experienced.

“It was so very exciting to see all our guests and locals enjoying themselves. It was such a pleasure to enjoy the best part of our community – our citizens,” she said.

“Our Czech heritage is an important part of the culture here and I’m so happy to see that we continue to honor and preserve it for everyone. What a great celebration of the golden anniversary of the National Polka Festival. Bravo to everyone that played a part in its success!”

Former mayor, Russell Thomas, was generous with positive reviews, but made a point to highlight the leadership of Danny Zaplatal, who has served as the leader of the National Polka Fest committee for 25 years.

“It was my honor to provide a tribute to Danny,” Thomas said. “He is retiring after this year and I wish him and all of his family the very best. This event gets better every year, thanks to Danny and his group.”
