Texas schools to count minutes, not days

Justin Tubbs

Texas students may no longer be counting down the days until summer.
A new state law has changed the Texas Education Code’s definition of a school year from 180 days to 75,600 minutes of instruction. One day is defined as 420 minutes.
“The rationale was to give districts more flexibility for making up missed instructional days,” Texas Education Agency spokeswoman DeEtta Culbertson said via the Star-Telegram. “This is a way for the district to not have to add additional days unless they want to.”
