Site chosen for new police station, public safety facility

The move into new digs for the Ennis police and fire departments has been a long time in the making. The current two-story brick building located at 115 S. Brown Street was first opened in 1915. The building also houses the department’s jail, city’s main fire station and city hall. Designed by Hix McCanless, like a lot of the buildings in downtown Ennis during that time, the building was designated as a historical landmark in 1985. While rumblings of when and where the city would eventually build a new public safety building have long been talked about, the city unveiled the perfect spot earlier this month. The Ennis Police Department announced on its Facebook page that the city decided the location of the future of the department’s new facility will be at 1700 W. Lake Bardwell Dr., and Old Bardwell Rd. The city has signed closing documents and the land has been purchased for the new police department and public safety facility. Ennis Police Chief John Erisman said the project has been a long time in the making and is happy that, although in the early stages, the project is off the ground and running.
