Sterilite opening bends to late summer

By Justin Tubbs

Thursday afternoon, construction workers began laying brick at the new 400,000 square-foot expansion project on Sterilite Drive.

A holdup due to weather has the Ennis Sterilite Corporation expansion a bit behind schedule but a summer opening is imminent.

“Weather was difficult, putting a screeching halt to everything for a little bit,” Steve Gilbert, contractor with Harrison, Walker and Harper said. “But we are moving right along now.”

Originally slated for a mid-July opening, the massive expansion facility is now prepped for an August or September opening.

The site will be a distribution center and warehouse, freeing up space at the current multi-million square-foot facility for more manufacturing space.

Marty Nelson, the city’s economic development director, has hinted there may be a phase 2 to the project at a later point that would double the expansion property’s size; although nothing has been formalized regarding a phase 2.
