Team looks for support
The Ennis American Legion baseball team is set to compete at the state level July 26, but they need Ennis’ help.
The team, part of the Junior Boys League division of Ennis Little League, is trying to raise money for the trip and has participated in several fundraisers including selling snow-cones at Bluebonnet Park during the senior midget league district tournament and hosting a bake sale. The team will wash cars for donations July 17 at AutoZone.
Coach Porfirio Rios, in his second year with the team, said they have really improved since last season. They only won three games last year, and ended this year’s regular season standing second in the Junior Boys League (ages 13-15). The 15-member team will stay in Eastland (three hours from Ennis) for as long as they advance in the tournament. This means they will need funding for hotel rooms and food while away. It is their main reason for fundraising. Several of the players have single parents or divorced parents with only one income and funding for the trip can be difficult.
