Three arrested in gift card thefts

By Justin Tubbs

Three were arrested in Ennis Monday for charges related to stealing Visa gift cards.

Jason York, the detective working the case with the Ennis Police Department said three suspects, all from Fort Worth, used stolen gift cards to purchase cigarettes.

“They had about 60 gift cards, and the numbers used on the receipts don’t match the numbers on the gift cards,” he said.

Police were notified by Brookshire’s employees that the group of three people bought a large quantity of cigarettes and were heading to nearby convenience stores to purchase more.

In all, the three bought three cartons and 67 individual packs of cigarettes.

“I think they were probably selling (the cigarettes) to a convenience store out of Fort Worth,” York said.

York said oftentimes thieves will take Visa gift cards, remove them from the cardboard packaging and leave. When someone attempts to actually purchase a Visa gift card, the stolen card would be loaded with money for the thief to use.

Thirty-nine-year-old Liniee Knight, 43-year-old Darnay Black and 29-year-old Shayla Winston were each charged with engaging in organized criminal activity. As of Wednesday morning, Black had been released on bail. Knight and Winston were still in Wayne McCollum Detention Center in Waxahachie.
