Veteran cop nearly crushed

Ennis Daily News photo by Phil Banker / Lt. Ron Roark watched from feet away in his cruiser Friday as this vehicle careened off of I-45 onto State Highway 34 below when the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel in Ennis.

If he were only a few feet further west on State Highway 34, Lt. Ron Roark’s long law enforcement career could have come to an end Friday afternoon — along with his life.

Roark watched as a car traveling southbound on Interstate 45 careened through the guardrails and fell 16 feet to the road below, barely missing the driver’s side of Roark’s vehicle.
