Duane Potter

Our family would like to announce the passing of Duane Potter, our “Potts”, on April 9, 2015. He was our anchor in everything we did, and we will miss him forever. We take great comfort in knowing he is in the arms of our Heavenly Father.

Duane was born Sept. 26, 1931, the only child of Clay and Lillie Pottter. He married Ann Muirhead on June 8,1951, and together they built a supportive and loving marriage. They happily worked together to enrich the lives of their children and grandchildren.

Potts’ original dream was to become a farmer and rancher. He loved the outdoors, but decided to change his course and entered the business world. In 1953, he began his business career at AT&T in Dallas, Texas. In 1966, still working for AT&T, he moved his family to Kansas City, Kan. Two years later, the family moved back to Texas and Duane began a career with Leggett & Platt, Inc. Upon his retirement in 1996, Duane was the Corporate Senior Vice-President of L & P; the President of the National Home Furnishings Group as well as President of the Foam Component Group. After retiring Potts became a Director on the Board of Leggett & Platt, Inc. until May 2002, at which time he served as an Advisory Director until May 2008. He relished his work, all his co-workers and all those he came in contact with… including his customers.

After retirement you could always see Potts and Mimi at the grandkids’ games and activities. He loved watching the sunsets at the lake house and greeting passers by from his chair on the front porch. Potts never met a person he didn’t like. He was a mentor and trusted advisor not only to his family but to all those he worked with as well. Potts’ life embraced gratitude and humility instead of entitlement. He taught his family and all those that knew him to be prepared and to always consider others before self.

Duane is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann; his daughter, Cindi Williams and husband Rick and their family: Zach and Ashley Williams; Braz and Lindsey Williams; son Greg Potter and wife Kay and their family: Nicole, Riley George and husband Michael, and Jake; son Rusty Potter and family: Dustyn, Nicole, and River. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren: Jaidyn Potter and Stratton Williams. The Potter family would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Joaquin Mendez, Potts’ dedicated caregiver and buddy, for all of his help and compassion. He made Potts so happy when delivering chocolate shakes and sneaking Almond Hersheys!

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 17, at 1:00 p.m. at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, PO Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174-0001 or to Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205.
