Maurine ‘Scotty’ Poff

Maurine Scott Poff finished her journey and went to her heavenly home on January 26, 2012. Maurine was born on October 21, 1918 in Bronte, Texas and was the oldest daughter of Ralph and Gertrude Scott. Their family moved to Kilgore in East Texas after oil was discovered in that area. She graduated from Kilgore High School and then attended Stephen F. Austin University where she earned a B.S. degree in Commerce and English in 1940.
After graduating from college, Maurine taught in the Kilgore ISD where she met her future husband, Jack W. Poff from Bardwell. Jack and Maurine married in 1948 and soon afterward moved to Ennis. Upon moving to Ennis, Maurine taught in the Ennis ISD. In 1956, Jack bought a half interest in the Thomas and Gilpin Mens Store. In 1962, Jack bought the other half interest and the store became known as Jack Poff Men and Boys Wear. Shortly after that time, Maurine joined Jack to work in the store, and she worked at the store for more than 40 years. She was known as “Scotty” to her friends in Ennis.
Scotty was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and played the piano for the 4th grade Sunday School class for many years. She was a devoted and loving wife, a loving, caring and supportive mother and the greatest example to her family on living a moral, purposeful life. She was soft spoken and kind hearted and made the best macaroni in town. Scotty, also called “Ma mere” (French word for “my mother”) by some of her grandchildren, will be missed very much.
Scotty is survived by one sister, Billie Ruth Whaley of El Cajon, California, three children: Trudy and J.R. Armas of Garland, Jack W. Poff, Jr. and Cindy of Ennis, and Joe Scott Poff and Patti of Houston. Scotty is also survived by her six angels or grand daughters, Amy and Roby Canaday, Dr. Whitney and Gavin Wolff, Ashlee and Trey Schoenvogel, Katie and Drew Wiechnicki, Kinsey Poff, and Claire Poff. Scotty also had 2 other brothers, Ralph Scott, Jr. and Joseph L. Scott, and one sister, Jo Dell Smith who predeceased her.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. A celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, February 1st at 2:00 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow in Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.
Memorials may be sent to the library fund at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1200 Country Club Road, Ennis, Tx. 75119.
