Michael W. Spurgeon, Sr., rode off into his final sunset on Sunday, March 24, when an oncoming vehicle veered into his police car, also carrying his eldest son, near Bardwell, Texas. Michael Sr. sauntered into our world on Oct. 1, 1951, in Ardmore, OK. After galloping around with his parents and three siblings, they all settled in Irving, TX., in 1963. Irving was home to him, his first wife, and their three children for many years. Michael Sr. was blessed enough to find love again after his first went to Heaven. Michael Sr. and his wife, Shannon, have been making their mark in Bardwell since 2006. Michael Sr. began his career as a law enforcement officer in Princeton, TX., in 2000. He became Chief of Police for the Bardwell Police Department in 2005, where he was the epitome of gentle leadership, gracious servantship, and generous protector. His unparalleled legacy can be heard, seen, and most profoundly, felt amongst the Bardwell community and all of his remaining loved ones. While Michael Sr. is selflessly serving in the Kingdom, the following both celebrate and comfort each other: son Justin Spurgeon and daughter-in-law Kyra, of Hurst; daughter Holly Morrow and son-in-law K.C., and grandchildren Chance and Kacye Mae, of Irving; beloved wife Shannon Spurgeon, of Bardwell; daughter Kayla Maynard, her husband Matthew, and grandchildren Kylie and Mason, of Bardwell; daughter Kelsey Willis, her husband Benjamin, and grandchildren Zackary, Vincent, Valla, Sydney, and one on the way; daughter Amber Young, Dylan Martinez, and grandchild Alexander Martinez; sister Carolyn Cox and brotherin-law Gaylon, of Euless; brother George Spurgeon and sister-in-law Phyllis, of Irving; sister Deanna Taylor and sister-in-law, Judy Hughes, of Melissa; and more family and friends than anyone could envision. Michael Sr. strolled hand-in-hand through the Lord’s Gates with his eldest son, Michael W. Spurgeon, Jr., and was met by his initial great love, Linda Spurgeon, and his parents, Botie and Elladine Spurgeon, as they preceded him in death. Family received friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home in Irving. Funeral services were held at noon on Monday, April 1, 2019 at Plymouth Park United Methodist Church at 1615 W. Airport Freeway in Irving.
