Noel Gossett

Noel Gossett, aged 81, died on April 16, 2016, at Legend Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Ennis, Texas, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

She was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on June 8, 1934, to Dorothy and Carl Sjoberg and was the oldest of three children. She graduated from Blackwell High School in Blackwell, Oklahoma. She then attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and The University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, sat on the editorial board of the school newspaper, “The Oklahoma Daily,” and majored in journalism. After graduation, she worked for the United Press as a staff writer and then in the advertising department for Rothschild’s Department Store in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She married CJ Gossett from Wills Point, Texas, in November 1958.

She and CJ moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where CJ attended dental school at the University of Missouri. She taught elementary school in Kansas City for three years before the birth of her first child, Gretchen, in 1963.

The family moved to Ennis in 1965. In 1966, she gave birth to her second child, Jim. While she stayed home as a housewife and mom, Noel was very active in community activities and other volunteer work. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Ennis Garden Club, and the Delphi Bridge Club among others. After her children graduated from high school, she started and ran the Bookshelf, a bookstore in downtown Ennis, for several years.

Noel will be remembered by all who knew her as a wise and loving wife, mother and grandmother, a gracious hostess who knew the true meaning of hospitality, a lover of books and all they can teach us, a true and loyal friend, and above all, a Christian who loved the Lord.

Noel is survived by her husband, CJ Gossett of Ennis, Texas; daughter, Gretchen and her husband, Charles Cunningham, of Dallas, Texas; grandson, David and granddaughters: Shannon, Rebecca and Catherine; son, Jim and his wife Chrissy, of New Braunfels, Texas; grandsons, Will and Adam and granddaughter Lila; brother, Jim Sjoberg and his wife Carol, of Corsicana, Texas; brother, Gerry Sjoberg and his wife Peggy, of Hempstead, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Ennis, 300 N. Sherman St., Ennis, TX 75119.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (michaeljfox.org) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
