Rio S. Pierce

Rio Sam Pierce, 92, passed away in Ennis, Texas on Wednesday, December 23, 2015.

Rio was born in Turkey, Texas on July 26, 1923, to Robert F. and Ita Blanch (Cruse) Pierce. He grew up in Littlefield, Texas and

attended school in Littlefield. On December 20, 1940, he married Dorothy Gorden and they made their home in Littlefield before moving

to Dallas in 1946. He served his country proudly in the United States Marines during WWII serving in the Pacific Theater he was part of

the landing on Okinawa on April 1, at one time during his career he was recommend for the Medal of Honor.

He was a City of Dallas officer for over 27 years and was one of the officers in the security detail that escorted Harvey Oswald when he

was fatally shot by Jack Ruby. He was also a jailer for Dallas County for 10 years retiring after 37 years of service. He was a member of

the Church of Christ in Ennis and the Church of Christ in Oak Cliff. He enjoyed spending time outdoors farming, gardening and taking

care of their horses.

He is survived by his loving wife of over seventy-five years, Dorothy Pierce; sons: Rio L Pierce and Philip Pierce; daughter,

Jenine Duarte; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis.

A Celebration of his life will take place on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of Christ of Ennis on Country

Club Road with Scott Brazell officiating. Pallbearers will be Rio L. Pierce Don Stafford, David Mote, Mark Varnado, Ernest DeLuna and

Jerry Dale Pierce. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the DFW National Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc.
