Alvarez departs for Copperas Cove

Jack Alvarez, new Copperal Cove athletic director and head football coach, right, is interviewed by Joe Lombardi after the special CCISD Board of Trustees meeting. Jack Alvarez, who was the second winningest coach in the history of Ennis football, stepped down after seven seasons to accept the head coach and athletic director positions at Class 6A Copperas Cove on Friday afternoon. “It was a good and a very happy crowd,” said Killeen Daily Herald sportswriter Felisa Cardenas, who covered the signing and press conference at the CCISD administration building. His signing with the Bulldawgs came after the abrupt departure and retirement of longtime head coach Jack Welch. The latter came to the Cove in 1994 and had a record of 193-84-1, including 18 years in the playoffs and a pair of appearances in the Class 4A state championship game.
