Alvarez’s potential successors jockeying for position


Two Ennis greats, Sam Harrell (left) and Jack Alvarez. The shopping list of potential football head coaches has a plethora of names, some with merit, others – not so much. Congenial Bob Taylor, the longtime Lions backer, said he will toss his name in the hat. “I have added my name a number of times,” he joked Saturday at the Lions baseball game. “I don’t really want the job, but I do ask that I am listed as second when the decision is made.” Since Jack Alvarez shook hands with the folks in Cop-Cove on Friday, the rumor mill officially opened. My email box and Facebook page have received scores of notes and messages with suggestions and questions. The pace-setter so far is former head coach Sam Harrell, who is the current Offensive Coordinator at nearby SAGU. No. 1 on the wins list with a 146-46 mark and three crowns made the offensive guru more popular than Ennis’ Lion King. To many, he still is.
