Meals on Wheels in need of volunteers

The holidays are here, and for Meals-on-Wheels organizers, like everyone else, it’s a busy and critical time.
Volunteers are scarcer this year, and the organization is eager to get the word out that help is much needed.
“This time of year, elderly and disabled people who live alone tend to suffer from depression, and there is an even greater need to check on them,” said Shanna Dunn, volunteer coordinator for the Ellis County offices of Meals on Wheels. “With the holidays, it’s more important than ever for dedicated volunteers to be available.”
Currently, Meals-on-Wheels has over 30 delivery routes providing meals countywide. Meals-on-Wheels depends on its volunteers to deliver to 10 communities in Ellis County, including Waxahachie, Palmer, Ennis, Bardwell, Midlothian, Maypearl, Italy, Milford, the Red Oak area, and Ferris.
“At this time, we have volunteer needs in all areas we serve,” Dunn said.
Prepared meals are picked up and served Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and noon countywide, delivery times taking no longer than an hour. Volunteers are provided with detailed directions and instructions.
Dunn said that whether it’s weekly, a couple of times a month, or simply to fill-in on an “on-call” basis, volunteers are needed not just to deliver nourishment to the elderly and physically challenged but to offer companionship.
“With daily contact from our volunteers, Meals-on-Wheels helps deal with the loneliness that many homebound persons feel on a regular basis, and especially during the holidays,” she added. “In some cases, the volunteer might be the only person that senior sees all day,” she continued.
Meals-on-Wheels is projected to serve over 41,000 meals between Thanksgiving Day and the first of the New Year, serving 675 people each day of the week. This is also the time of year the organization conducts its annual holiday funding appeal, and is accepting donations to help with the cost of meals. A home-delivered meal costs $6.

Meals-on-Wheels is a community-based non-profit organization that has served the residents of Ellis County for over six years.
