Veterans Services officer honored

Charles Kelker of Ennis, head of local VFW, is military hero
Ennis resident Charles Kelker has been awarded a Certificate of Honor for his work with the Veterans County Service Officers Association of Texas (VCSOA).
The Association has five regions in Texas, and Kelker received the award for the Dallas Region, which includes several counties.
As assistant director of the Dallas Region, he participates in quarterly meetings for the Veteran’s Association to discuss activities, brings input from Veterans to the meetings, and represents Veterans to resolve problems with officials. This process has been responsible for reducing wait time on telephone calls by one-third, and efforts are ongoing to hire more operators to assist in answering veterans’ questions by telephone in a more timely manner.
Kelker served in the military for 27 years and three days. He joined the Army at Fort Dix on June 28, 1948 and retired July 1, 1975. He served in Korea and Vietnam and retired with the rank of SFC, Grade E7. His last tour of duty was in Berlin, Germany where he returned after his military discharge to work as a civilian as Chief of Budget/Management for the Army until 1994.
Kelker’s oldest son is retired from the Air Force, his second is retired from the Army, and his third son is on active duty for the Navy. His youngest daughter also serves on active duty in the Army. His family includes two more daughters. A member of the Ennis Kiwanis Club, Kelker served as president during 2006-2007. He was VFW Post Commander in Berlin, Germany, and is now in his third year as Post Commander at the Ennis VFW. Through Kelker’s leadership, the VFW continues to support a number of important community events and efforts, such as the Sweetheart Banquet sponsored by Faith Assembly of God Church this month.
Kelker served as a volunteer under James Wilhoite, Director of Veteran’s Services for Ellis County. He was hired to work part time by Wilhoite in October 2006.
