Give history a chance

It’s history in the making for the Ennis Daily News.
Our “History” special section will be published as a broadsheet supplement to the Friday, Feb. 29 issue and will include an array of stories about past events and people that have helped make and shape Ennis.
Over the years EDN history editions have included monographs of the St. John Catholic Church and the former Ennis Municipal Hospital, essays on local Czech heritage, and tributes to personalities like World War II hero Lt. Jack Lummus and pioneering African-American minister Dr. C.A. Harris.
2008 “History” section features will be culled from the most popular newsroom-generated stories appearing in the EDN over the last year, along with original photographs and articles submitted by readers.
An updated story on the seven Ennis men who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima will be among items in the upcoming “History” edition. Another story in the section will be about the reputed Raphael Ranch treasure that made national headlines in the 1950s. Profiles of local people –– and those with local ties –– will include Father H.D. Brickley, pastor of the first Catholic congregation in Ennis in the 1890s, gunslinger John Wesley Hardin, whose family relocated in Ennis and singer Ernest Tubb who was born in Crisp.
The EDN is proud of Ennis as it was and as it is now –– and we know readers will enjoy this year’s “History” section, “honoring the people and places of Ennis’ past.”
