Armed man arrested outside local bar

Ennis police took custody of a man Friday detained outside the Wooden Nickel in the 100 block of W. Ennis Ave. after the suspect hit a parked vehicle while driving intoxicated.
According to the police report, at 12:07 a.m. Ennis officers were dispatched to the scene of the accident where Ben Moore, an off-duty Wilmer police officer, was working security for the Wooden Nickel. Moore reported observing the suspect hit the other vehicle and attempt to flee the scene. While attempting to identify the suspect inside the vehicle Moore noticed the suspect fumbling with something that turned out to be a 9-mm pistol.
Moore detained the suspect until Ennis police arrived to transport him to the police department. It was determined the suspect was intoxicated and an open container of alcohol was found inside the vehicle.
David Casas, 25, of Ennis was charged with driving while intoxicated and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Man arrested for assault, resisting arrest
An Ennis man is in custody for alleged aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
According to the police report, Sunday at 1 a.m. officers were dispatched to the 200 block of S. Hall St. in reference to reports of a man with a gun. When police arrived they observed two subjects in the driveway.
One subject said a family disagreement had taken place while the other man was combative and disruptive toward the officers.
The complainant told police the suspect had knocked out a window during the argument and told family members he was going to get his gun out of his vehicle. The suspect’s uncle spoke with the suspect to convince him not to get his weapon and that is when police arrived.
The report stated police located a weapon in the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to place him under arrest. The subject struggled with police and officers used pepper spray to detain the man.
The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to Ennis police department without further incident. It was later discovered the man was wanted on Waxahachie police warrants.
Rodney Birdow, 25, of Ennis was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and out of town warrants.

Sibling in jail for assault

Ennis police arrested a subject for allegedly assaulting his sister Sunday night.
At 11:30 p.m. officers arrived in the 1900 block of S. Hall St. and the suspect’s sister told police her brother was intoxicated and had threatened her. The brother, still at the scene, got into a verbal altercation with Officer Sherman Swafford while being questioned about the incident and was placed under arrest.
Rafael Mendiola, 28, of Ennis was charged with simple assault by threat.
