Blood donations needed now

Donating blood is more important now than ever and we hope to see a good turnout of donors at the Carter BloodCare blood drive to be held at H-E-B Grocery on August 1.
When Mayor Russell Thomas’ daughter Anna was diagnosed with a serious illness late last year and needed blood donations, our community rallied to support her with several blood drives. Though Anna is now doing well, there are many others who are in need of blood every day. During the summer months the blood supplies often run low, because the need is greater. With more people traveling for vacations, the number of accidents increases and blood supplies are used faster than they’re replenished.
It’s easy to ignore the need when it doesn’t affect you or someone you know personally. When Anna Thomas was in need, our community came forward. We hope that on August 1, our community will step up again, this time for the many thousands of people who are also in need, though we may not know their names.
We are a generous community. We freely give of our time, talent and money to worthwhile causes in an effort to help those who are less fortunate or are suffering. Let’s be just as generous with our blood donations at the upcoming blood drive.
Carter BloodCare officials recommend that potential donors be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and generally be in good health. They also advise that anyone wishing to donate blood eat a nourishing meal before doing so.
Anyone thinking of donating at the HEB drive is asked to call for an appointment if possible so officials have an idea of how many to expect. For more information call 972-935-6112.
