Barton won’t retire, says press secretary

Internet rumors of congressman stepping down are untrue
Sixth District of Texas Congressman Joe Barton (R-Ennis) and his office have been fielding inquiries this week regarding speculation that he plans to retire in 2010 after mention of the intended date surfaced on the internet.
According to Barton’s press secretary Sean Brown, that date and any other rumored upcoming date of retirement is incorrect.
“There is absolutely no truth behind rumors that Congressman Barton will be resigning in 2010,” Brown said. “He certainly is not retiring in 2010, and he may not ever retire.”
Barton, first elected to serve the Sixth District of Texas in 1984, was selected by colleagues to chair the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the first Texan to hold the position since former House Speaker Sam Rayburn.
Barton’s Sixth District territory includes: Ellis and Navarro County, portions of Limestone, Tarrant and Trinity counties, Leon County, Freestone County and Houston County.
Next month the congressman will be holding “town hall” meetings to address legislative updates and issues of importance to constituents.
