Children should learn about guns

As we reported in our Sunday edition, a truly horrible tragedy was narrowly avoided when a local youngster accidentally shot his younger brother with a handgun kept in his home.
The bullet passed through the boy’s abdomen without damaging major organs and he is expected to fully recover.
This situation could have been significantly worse and it should serve as a wake-up call to anyone who owns a gun.
We firmly believe that Americans should have the right to own firearms, whether for sporting purposes or self-protection. But this Constitutional right also carries with it significant responsibilities. It will never be possible to avoid accidental shootings altogether, but there are steps every gun owner can take to help ensure it doesn’t happen with their firearm.
Guns and ammunition should be stored separately and preferably under lock and key, especially when children are in the house. That means any chidlren, any time. Just because a gun owner may not have children of their own living with them, they could very likely have children of friends or family members come visit. If these children aren’t familiar with firearms – or even if they are – terrible accidents could happen.
We feel it’s vital that all children be taught gun safety. Television and movies serve to numb children to the very real danger posed by a loaded weapon. It’s up to adults to make sure children understand that firearms are not toys and are never to be handled without adult supervision.
It only takes one second to pull a trigger and the consequences can last a lifetime. Please do your part to protect children by keeping firearms locked away and making sure your children understand that every gun should be treated as if it is loaded.
If we take the threat seriously, we can all help to make sure senseless firearm deaths are avoided.
