October marked for Czech heritage

The Ellis County Commissioners’ Court declared October as Czech Heritage Month in Ellis County when they met Monday.
Victor Havel, president of the Ellis County Czech Heritage Society, and other representatives came to the meeting dressed in Czech costumes to represent their heritage. Havel thanked the commissioners for proclaiming October as Czech Heritage month, and presented the four commissioners and County Judge Carol Bush with lapel pins depicting the Czech and American flags. There are many Czech Americans living in Ellis County, and most of their ancestors immigrated to Ellis County in the early 1900s. Havel said he would like to see more Czech-Americans learn the Czech language.

“The heart of our culture is the Czech language, and it is slowly dying out in Ellis County,” Havel said.

He said he wants there to be a class to teach the language, and he will hopefully come back next year to ask for the court’s help.
