Wranglers rally past Lions on OT buzzer beater

The host West Mesquite Wranglers didn’t have a lead after 9-8 until they went up 61-60 in overtime against the Ennis Lions on Tuesday night, but they did just enough to complete an improbable comeback.
After Ennis (0-1) led 38-23 late in the first half, West Mesquite staged a 14-0 run extending into the third quarter to get back in it. A putback at the buzzer in overtime provided a shocking and disappointing end for the Lions in a 64-62 season-opening loss. West Mesquite won the opener last year in Ennis 66-50.

“The bottom line is we weren’t able to step up and make free throws on the road,” said coach Jerry Mason, after Ennis missed seven of nine attempts at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and then both of its free throws in overtime.

“West Mesquite made some good plays and their point guard (Javier Soria – 21 points) did a very good job, but if we make free throws (West Mesquite) can’t win this game. We had the lead and didn’t do the necessary things to close it out.”
